I think it was about 6pm yesterday when I was driving back from office. I had just put my phone’s headset on, as the stupid radio in my car was code-locked. As I browsed through the frequencies to Radio 1, Georgina Bowman was reading the national news like any other day. Suddenly I hear, “Massive fire burns down the home of Gatecrasher. More on this later”. As she very casually announced the demise of Gatecrasher, I was all awake and glued to the radio, waiting for more update on this shocking revelation. Is it THE Gatecrasher or something else?? It can’t be possibly true, can it? 10 mins later – my worst fears had come true. It was the Gatecrasher One nightclub or Republic, as it was adoringly called few years ago. At about 5pm, a fire had started inside this legendary venue and the whole building had burnt down. The same building which, during the University time, was literally my second home (yes…nobody can topple Bar One from the top spot). It was my temple where I had initiated the real clubbing experience. Those Monday nights and ‘Bubblegum’ nights on Fridays…Oh fuck!!! What about those Gatecrasher nights on Saturdays when the best dance music was played non-stop till 6am every week.

5:30am - The after-effects of a late saturday night at Gatecrasher!!
No wonder it was voted as the world’s best clubbing night back in 2000. Those endless queues of vodka-coke at the bar…me and my halls of residence friends dressing up in huge wigs…the reliable late night bus service back to Sorby hall…the sights of John, Gavi and me going clubbing with our lecture bags after fooling around in the IT centre till 11pm…and what about me, Rohit, Vishnu, Vicky and Vikram standing outside the club and singing the national anthem on 2nd October!! Ohhh man there are so many memories attached to this lovely club. It was just so hard to believe when I heard about this damned fire. Irrespective of the confusion if the flames were started deliberately or was it a pure accident - I am sure the kind of club Gatecrasher is, it will soon build itself up and those humungous speakers and lovely ladies will be throbbing the dance floor again.
3rd Sep 2005 - My last night in Gatecrasher (so nostalgic)!!
